WELSH MOUNTAIN COTTAGE
Rock of the Summer Pasture
HISTORY
Tucked deep in the countryside, the cottage has belonged to the Whitwell family for more than three decades. When Carolyn and David first found it, the house stood quiet and weathered, no mains electricity, no modern comforts, just endless potential and the kind of silence that makes you stop and listen.
Over the years, with patience and muddy boots, they breathed life back into it. They rebuilt the outbuildings stone by stone, added the cosy bathroom, restored the extension, and finally brought electricity to the cottage. They dug out the pond by hand and planted close to 4,000 trees, a small forest of their own making. What was once a humble, tired cottage slowly became a sanctuary, wrapped in 23 acres of wild meadow, whispering woodland, and birdsong.
I grew up here, spending long, golden summers roaming the fields and waking up to the smell of dew on the grass. It’s the place where I learned what stillness feels like, and what it is to feel completely at home.
Now, my husband Kieran and I are stepping into the next chapter of the cottage’s story. We live in Bristol, where we run a hospitality company, but our hearts are very much rooted here. We’re opening the doors so that others can experience what this place has given our family: rest, joy, and that rare feeling of being truly away.
Our ambition is simple, to preserve and enhance everything that makes the cottage special. To create a space that feels relaxed, soulful, and effortlessly comfortable. To continue nurturing the land so it flourishes with wildlife, biodiversity, and a sense of quiet magic.
This cottage has always been a labour of love. We can’t wait to share it with you.
